5 Ways to Improve your Mental Health in Your Home
Home Sweet Home. It's a simple idea to bring the things that make you the happiest into the place you call home. A place where you can be yourself and recharge from outside pressures and demands. From colors to coziness, from appealing smells to soothing sounds our home can serve for meditation to command central. Here are 5 ways to help reduce stress and bring more tranquility to your space.
1) Use color. Mood and behavior can be affected by the colors you are surrounded with. Surround yourself with colors in your home that make you feel happy. Allowing natural light to flow in where possible and use mirrors to redirect sunlight. For a more tranquil environment choose shades of taupe, green and subdued blue or radiate happiness with brighter shades throughout your space.
2) Remove clutter. Clean, organized spaces allow our minds to rest and can reduce the everyday frustrations of lost or misplaced items. In fact organizing a space can be down right empowering. Where to start? Decluttering and purging can be stressful and overwhelming, start small with a drawer then make a plan to tackle each room along with a system to stay on top of your organization and belongings.
3) Invite conversation. Something as simple as the layout of your furniture can cause your environment to promote (or obstruct) conversations. Arranging chairs and sofas to face one another or adding seating to food prep areas can encourage easy interactions. Adding soft textiles such as throws and blankets can make your space more warm and comfortable.
4) Stress free surfaces. When you are shopping for surfaces for your home environment, (countertops, textiles, wallcoverings and flooring), think about your lifestyle and the practicality of the cleaning and maintenance of those finishes. Do not create added worry over the upkeep of these investments. If you have your heart set on an aesthetic ask the experts how you can get that particular look along with lower maintenance options.
5) Make it uniquely you. There is no right or wrong when it comes to creating your home environment. You may feel sheltered and relaxed in a dark room surrounded by books or in a more sterile space void of color and clutter. Explore your emotions and how your mind and body interconnect with your surroundings.
